Nestle

Overview
With a total workforce of approximately 224,540 people in some 479 factories worldwide, Nestlé is the largest food company in the world with products available in nearly every country. Nestlé's best known product lines include Nescafe, Nesquik, Kit Kat, Butterfinger, Wonka, Carnation and Stouffers. Nestlé produces baby food, diary products, breakfast cereals, chocolate and confectionary, prepared foods, bottled water and petcare products as well as food services on a global scale and requires a world class IT infrastructure to support it.

Challenge
Like many other enterprise companies, Nestle faced challenges with the creation of bill of materials and material master records. Creation of material masters is part of the critical initial steps of any process, product or project in the company. A material master is used by multiple departments through the lifecycle of a product or project and requires input from multiple groups for creation. At Nestle, the material master creation process was largely manual with information being dispersed via Excel spreadsheets and passed from group to group for updates. The major challenges with this method of creation included:
  • No Ownership - The manual process virtually decoupled the physical record from the owner with no easy way to determine a records status or where it was in the process.
  • Labor Intensive - Creation and routing of material masters was manual and required information to be re-keyed into legacy systems and Nestle's SAP system.
  • Lost Data - Duplication of data entry, incomplete fields, and missing information resulted in lost records and inefficient processes.
  • No Visibility - There were no options for tracing progress or tracking down bottlenecks which resulted in vagueness and confusion when trying to determine status.
Optura Solution
Nestle implemented Optura Master Data Management, a composite application that integrates with Nestle's existing SAP system, to overcome the challenges with their material masters. Optura Master Data Management streamlines the creation, routing and information collection process enabling rapid and efficient creation of material masters with visibility into the entire record lifecycle.

Optura Master Data Management enables material masters to be created through an automated workflow with access for creation and modification of the record. Data is input directly to the SAP system by the attribute owner. Through the entire process, data and content retains ownership with only authorized parties able to make modifications in the fields they own. The material masters become dynamic and accurate sources of information for all processes and systems downstream.

Results
Implementing Optura Material Data Management has produced measurable and definable results for Nestle. In addition to a much smoother creation process, Nestle experienced the following benefits that resulted in a high ROI for the Optura implementation:
  • Original cycle time for material masters was reduced from 2-3 weeks to two days.
  • Original error rate of 40% was reduced to zero.
  • Original data entry for master records was reduced from 20 minutes to a few seconds.
  • Data in SAP is current and accurate.
  • Personnel experienced much higher job satisfaction.
